Doors are often overlooked, yet they play a critical role in patient comfort, privacy, and overall experience. At the South Jordan VA Clinic in South Jordan, Utah, Serenity Sliding Door Systems helped deliver that comfort with sliding doors built specifically for healthcare.
Completed in 2020 for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the clinic was developed by MHTN Architects in partnership with the University of Utah Health to expand access to care for veterans across Utah. The 30,000-square-foot facility successfully serves over 4,000 veterans a year with a wide range of healthcare needs–from family practice to women’s health, mental health, audiology, and more. With this broad scope of care, creating private, quiet spaces was a top priority.
Serenity provided 89 sliding door systems throughout the clinic. More than just a design feature, these doors are packed with thoughtful functionality. They’re soft-closing, sound-sealed, ADA-compliant, and lockable—built to meet the rigorous demands of fast-paced healthcare settings. Compared to bulky swing doors, Serenity’s systems help maximize usable space, streamline foot traffic, and maintain clear hallways for both staff and patients.
In environments where privacy is essential, Serenity’s sliding door systems deliver. Equipped with integrated Sound Seals and an Automatic Door Bottom, these systems are engineered to significantly reduce noise transfer between exam rooms, corridors, and public areas. The door bottom automatically engages when the door is closed, providing excellent sound attenuation—an ideal solution for spaces requiring an STC 35 rating.
But the benefits go beyond acoustics. Serenity’s sliding doors align with the VA’s collaborative care model–offering a smooth, soft-close motion that enhances both the user experience and the environment. Their quiet operation and sleek appearance support calm, focused care—exactly what the VA’s Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model calls for. By minimizing noise and disruption, Serenity helps create spaces where providers can collaborate effectively and patients feel at ease.
Built Tough for Healthcare Demands
Serenity’s systems are engineered to meet the unique challenges of healthcare design. For the South Utah Clinic, many doors included ADA-compliant privacy deadlocks with thumbturns—balancing patient security with staff convenience. Soft closing hardware helps prevent slamming, reduce wear, and maintain a peaceful clinical atmosphere. The mechanism has been tested to 200,000 cycles, ensuring long-term reliability and minimal maintenance over time.
In addition to delivering high-performance products, Serenity is known for industry-leading customer service. For this project, Serenity supplied white maple doors in both flush and full-lite styles, framed in durable anodized aluminum. Their systems are available with a variety of door slabs, finishes, and hardware options – including nearly any locking function. Optional upgrades like sloped valances further support infection control in sterile environments.
